Waxman Says FDA Dropped the Ball on Lead Contamination Investigation
April 06, 2007 11:50 AM
Anna Schecter Reports:
The Food and Drug Administration is under fire for failing to take "even basic first steps" to investigate elevated levels of lead in a popular women's vitamin supplement.
Lead poisoning can cause permanent brain damage, hypertension, organ failure and death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.
In January, an independent testing company reported it had found high levels of lead in The Vitamin Shoppe-brand Multivitamins Especially for Women. The supplements contained 15.3 micrograms of lead, according to the company New York-based Consumerlab.com. According to the FDA, pregnant women should not ingest more than 25 micrograms daily of lead; small children should not have more than six micrograms.
"Given the potential public health hazard posed by this product, I was disturbed to learn that your agency had taken no meaningful steps to investigate these allegations," Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, said in a recent letter to FDA Chairman Andrew von Eschenbach.
The Vitamin Shoppe company has questioned the accuracy of the Consumerlab.com report in press reports but immediately recalled the Multivitamins Especially for Women when the report was issued.

“All Truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Then it is violently opposed. Finally, that same idea is accepted as self-evident.” -Arthur Schopenhauer c.1840
Truth is information.
Information is power.
Information has the power to change minds, to change legislation, to change the way we feel, and the way we heal.
When it was discovered that disease was, at least partially, caused by invisible organisms, we gained power through the practice of thorough hygiene (note: this was a “recent discovery”). Today, no one looks at you with skepticism for washing your hands, but just a few hundred years ago, this would have been considered a waste of water, if not taboo.
When it was discovered that our Earth is spherical, not a flat object seated on the back of a giant cosmic turtle, a power was released. The power of the human mind was no longer limited by the constraints of a false truth.
Whether information is correct or corrupt does not seem to affect its acceptance as truth.
The two major factors that clearly determine the spread of new ideas:
1.Money
2.Implied Credibility
Today, great truths are subject to ridicule and opposition by the same minds that told you that the world is flat. If the world remained flat, the human mind could never conceive orbiting satellites and space exploration. If there is more to health than a side-effect laden, symptom masking pharmacopea of magic pills, imagine how much healthier we could be.
All matter is essentially condensed energy. Energy is purely vibrational probability. Therefore, if the human body is purely comprised of matter, then we are purely energetic, highly flexible, and never static. Quantum physicists all agree. Profit-minded pharmaceutical corporations do not agree. As long as we choose to put our money, and therefore, the power of authority, into the hands of drug companies, the dominant truth will always reflect the interests of the drug companies. The vast majority of all scientific research and development is the result of corporate funding. Investigations are exposing clear relationships between research “findings” and the sponsor for that study.
Often, information watchdog organizations, despite altruistic intentions to keep us safe, simply create more confusion and distraction. We are currently watching www.quackwatch.org
Skepticism is healthy. The same perspective can also keep us from being heathly, just as “the fist starves the hand.” Some of the information that these well-intentioned “scientists” are subjecting to ridicule, should be subjected to more open-minded scrutiny and well-funded, unbiased analysis. For example, click on this text to view a blog intended to use Darwin to invalidate homeopathy. Charles Darwin, an undisputed scientific authority, felt that homeopathy was valid and effective when it improved his chronic conditions, but considered the practice to be quackery, when it failed to save his daughter. Haven’t we all felt this way at some moment? Sometimes living in faith, sometimes losing it.
Darwin was a faith-based scientist for much of his noted life, but denied God when his daughter was not spared. The author of the article that is hyperlinked to the previous text is writing a blog concerning Charles Darwin’s scientific authority, while citing correspondence letters that are merely the opinions of a newly-disheartened, highly skeptical atheist.
One day the headline read- “Eggs are bad for you”
The next day a headline reads- “Eggs are good for you”
Which one is true? Well, it depends who you ask (and who signs their paycheck).
Every day, 300 people die from correctly prescribed pharmaceuticals. Antibiotic over-use has created a new spectrum of drug-resistant strains. Obviously, there is more to health than has been provided for by the current medical authority. We have a responsibility to question, with due-diligence, any authority who claims to have a complete perspective while denying the emergence of new possibilities .

Attaining true health: New options for total wellness
Studies increasingly report that Americans spend more per capita on health-care than any other developed nation. In fact, we spend almost double the yearly average medical expenditure, as compared to the rest of the world. To make matters worse, these same studies confirm that we have the most limited access to medical resources, our conventional testing procedures are riddled with inaccuracy, and many of us are forced to visit hospital emergency rooms to obtain prompt medical attention.
Yet, studies are also clearly showing that a great majority of Americans are seeking therapy through complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM), including chiropractic, acupuncture, hypnotherapy, and nutritional supplements. If you include the use of megavitamins and prayer, we now find that over 60 percent of Americans feel that it takes more than a doctor to be healthy. This is for a good reason. People who visit holistically oriented practitioners to compliment their traditional doctors, have lower total medical costs and higher patient satisfaction than those treated solely by conventional methods, according to the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapies. How much lower? A recent seven year study showed that patients visiting CAM practitioners had 60% fewer hospitalizations, 62% fewer out-patient surgeries, and 85% lower pharmaceutical costs compared to exclusively HMO rates and costs.
Now, taking an increasing role in advanced wellness options, is a type of biofeedback testing called Electro-Dermal Screening. Similar in concept to applied kinesiology muscle testing, whose accuracy has been proven over 80%, the electro-dermal screening or “body scan,” measures electrical resistance in the body, and can clearly identify energetic sensitivities to thousands of substances and factors. This technology is among the most “modern” health tools available, bridging advanced science with traditional healing techniques and natural medicine.
The EDS Body Scan takes about an hour and a half, is pain-free, non-invasive, non-claustrophobic, and a refreshing change from conventional testing procedures. The test results, combined with a discussion of lifestyle and nutrition, can be profoundly successful in determining and eliminating factors that contribute to toxicity and illness.
Modern Life can be hazardous to your health!
Consider two questions. First, if environmental chemical pollutants are known to cause cancer, why do conventional medical treatments focus on removing the cancer and not the agents that are the likely culprit? It is a scientific fact that dangerous toxins accumulate in the body. Therefore, detoxification and successful elimination of toxic substances must be an essential element in restoring health. Why is it, then, so unusual to hear a doctor recommend simple, natural methods for eliminating the waste that might be making you sick? Second question. Why do we treat our pets for internal parasites, but rarely ourselves? Studies show that between 75-95% of Americans are host to parasites, and conventional testing procedures are still grossly inaccurate. Scientists and alternative healthcare practitioners are increasingly of the opinion that the interactions between toxins and parasites within the body are truly at the root of disease. So why is there so little focus on something so obvious? The answers to these questions will vary greatly, depending upon who is asked.
It is no coincidence that New Jersey is one of the most polluted places on Earth, and is home to some of the highest rates of incidence and prevalence of cancer, as well. With emerging evidence connecting frighteningly common industrial pollutants to autism, developmental disorders, chronic fatigue syndrome, MS, fibromyalgia, reproductive dysfunction, ADD/ADHD and countless other illnesses, it is becoming clear that addressing and preventing disease requires advanced techniques for cleansing organs, eliminating parasites, and detoxifying accumulated chemicals.
In an effort to bring truly comprehensive care to Central New Jersey, a team of trained, dedicated professionals, has brought the body scan technology to Monmouth County. Experience new levels of wellness, achieve peace-of-mind, honest information, and a roadmap back to the health you deserve. Call Sanctus Wellness LLC to schedule your body scan today. (732) 687-6874

New Jersey Now the First State to Require Compulsory Flu, Pertussus, and Meningitis Vaccinations-Know Your Rights
Only New Jersey Assemblywoman Charlotte Vandervalk (R-Bergen), a sponsor of a bill (A165) that would allow parents to opt out of the vaccine mandates by filing a "conscientious exemption" form with the local health department, voted against these vaccine requirements. She noted "I'm gravely concerned about what's happening here today," said Assemblywoman Charlotte Vandervalk (R-Bergen), a sponsor of a bill (A165) that would allow parents to opt out of the vaccine mandates by filing a "conscientious exemption" form with the local health department. "With New Jersey reporting the highest incidence of autism and a cause yet to be identified, we don't know what will happen," she said. "What happened to our freedom?"
Thank you Assemblywoman Vandervalk! When you reintroduce your bill in the new legislature this January, we will be ready to educate decision makers about what is one of the first true "conscientious objection" statutes to protect everyone from forced vaccinations! We've asked our fellow foundation Trustee and counsel, Ralph Fucetola JD (also a Jersian) to keep a close watch on this developing story, through his Vitamin Lawyer Health Freedom blog, which you can reach through our FDA Watch page through our home page, www.HealthFreedomUSA.org.

Enter the rabbit hole . . .
Even deeper . . .
Unless we put medical freedom into the Constitution, the time will come when medicine will organize into an undercover dictatorship to restrict the art of healing to one class of men and deny equal privileges to others: The Constitution of this Republic should make a special privilege for medical freedom as well as religious freedom."
